One of the great management thinkers, Peter Drucker, once said, “Life is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change.” In today’s fast-paced world, what once seemed certain has changed dramatically. To keep up, we must continuously learn, adapt, and sometimes unlearn outdated ways of thinking.  

Lifelong learning is not just about acquiring knowledge. It is an antidote to stagnation. Consider Virginia Hislop, a 101-year-old woman who, 83 years after leaving Stanford University, returned to complete her degree. Many of the world’s most successful leaders share a growth mindset, recognizing that the willingness to keep learning fuels their progress.  

Why Learning Matters: The Kodak Lesson 

The story of Kodak serves as a stark reminder of what happens when we stop evolving. Despite inventing the first digital camera, Kodak failed to embrace new technology and went bankrupt in 2012. Clinging to the past cost them their future. Likewise, if we resist learning, we risk becoming irrelevant and losing our impact.  

Jesus, our greatest example, valued lifelong learning. He called us to:  

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)  

Jesus constantly taught His disciples, using every opportunity from the Beatitudes to parables, to help them grow. If we desire wisdom, we must also adopt a learner’s heart.  

The New World of Learning 

Technology has removed many barriers to education. Today, distance and cost are no longer obstacles, thanks to free online courses, digital libraries, and open universities. But lifelong learning is not confined to formal education.  

Growth happens everywhere:  

• A quarterly check-in with a mentor, discussing career insights and challenges.  

• Reading books and articles outside your field to broaden your perspective.  

• Learning through experience, conversations, and reflection.  

A mentor of mine, based in Nairobi, has greatly influenced me, despite the miles between us. Our meetings are not structured, yet each interaction leaves me richer in wisdom, often in ways he doesn’t even realize.  

How to Cultivate a Learning Habit 

To make learning a way of life, we must be intentional. One simple habit is to dedicate time daily even if it’s just reading a few pages of a book before bed. Treat it like a non-negotiable ritual, as essential as brushing your teeth.  

Albert Einstein once said:  

“The day you stop learning is the day you start dying.” 

In this sense, “dying” means ceasing to grow. No one has all the answers; our associations should challenge us to expand our thinking.  

Breaking Old Patterns  

A friend of mine, now in his 50s, once said:  

“At my age, what do I need school for? I’ll leave that to my kids.” 

I reminded him that learning is not confined to classrooms. He thought for a moment and said:  

“Come to think of it, I’ve bought so many books I’ve never read. Maybe it’s time to start.”  

We all carry limiting beliefs shaped by our backgrounds. For example, in Ghana, children are often taught not to look adults in the eyes, a sign of respect. However, in many workplaces today, avoiding eye contact can be misinterpreted as dishonesty or insecurity. Recognizing these shifts allows us to unlearn habits that no longer serve us.  

A Lifelong Commitment to Growth 

Lifelong learning is more than acquiring degrees it’s about staying relevant, adaptable, and continuously growing. Whether it’s keeping up with industry trends, engaging in mentorship, or learning from daily interactions, cultivating a growth mindset is the key to making a lasting impact.  

Ultimately, the pursuit of knowledge is timeless. Regardless of age or circumstance, learning keeps us vibrant, adaptable, and ever-evolving. By embracing lifelong learning, we don’t just stay relevant we unlock our potential to thrive and contribute meaningfully throughout life.
